Esther Stutzman | Elder, Kalapuya Tribe

Esther has been a traditional storyteller for over fifty years, relating stories of her ancestors, the Komemma Kalapuya and Hanis Coos. She has presented to schools libraries and universities during this time, bringing an authentic flavor to storytelling. She was formerly a teacher, curriculum developer and historical researcher and is currently working on a project to revive the Kalapuya language. In 2017, she was presented with the Oregon Governor’s Lifetime Achievement Award for the arts.


Shannin Stutzman | Indigenous Song Keeper, Kalapuya Tribe

 

Shannin is Esther Stutzman’s daughter who was raised in the traditions of her ancestors, the Komemma Kalapuya and Hanis Coos. She has a lifetime of experience in education and traditional youth summer camp administration. She serves as the indigenous song keeper and instructor for the youth camp as well as presenting to many educational venues along with her mother. She is deeply involved in the Kalapuya Language project, serving as curriculum writer and researcher.


Dr. David G. Lewis | ethno-historian and anthropologist

PhD Anthropology (UO 2009) and Native history researcher. Member of the Grand Ronde Tribe, Takelma, Chinook, Molalla, and Santiam Kalapuya ancestry. Owner of Ethnohistory Research LCC, professional consultant and project researcher. I teach at local universities and colleges and take contracts with tribes, local governments and nonprofits. I have experience in archival organization, museum development, exhibit curation, traditional cultural property nomination, tribal ethnohistoric research, tribal maps, traditional ecological knowledge, and presentations to large and small gatherings.
