Coyote Creek South (ODFW-owned land near the Fern Ridge Reservoir) is looking fabulous with colorful wildflowers responding positively to last September’s broadcast burn! Burning clears accumulated thatch from dead vegetation, opening up bare ground for nesting native pollinators, grassland birds, and new seeds to establish. Prairies like this co-evolved with fires set intentionally every few years by the Kalapuya people. Fire remains a critical tool for both ecological uplift and cultural reconnection with the land. Earlier this month, 18 "Oak Folks" - a group of local restoration staff - gathered at Coyote Spencer Wetlands to tour a restoration project where LTWC partnered with McKenzie River Trust and Meadowlark Forestry to complete 61 acres of oak woodland thinning last summer. They saw lots of blooming native flowers that are enjoying the newly opened tree canopy and reduced shrub cover! They also gave some good suggestions for the next phase of the project. We are lucky to have such a robust network of knowledgeable "Oak Folk" professionals in our region through the to Ridges Partnership!

On Earth Day, the Long Tom Watershed Council celebrates the efforts of the Native educators, youth Interns, and Native families of the Traditional Ecological Inquiry Program in helping to transform human relationships to the land and water based on the wisdom earned since time immemorial by the original peoples who have and continue to live on and care for this land. This educational program is predicated on honoring and recognizing the unique ecological knowledge and traditions of Indigenous peoples, and serves to preserve and uplift Indigenous cultural identities.
