Owens Creek Fish Passage & Habitat Restoration at Barrows’

The Barrows family partnered with LTWC to enhance habitat for native fish and wildlife on their property along Owens Creek, a major tributary in the Bear Creek sub-basin west of Junction City off  High Pass Rd.

LTWC removed two barriers that prevented native fish like cutthroat trout from moving upstream, opening up access to 1.5 miles of excellent upstream habitat trout use for spawning and juvenile rearing. Finley National Wildlife Refuge donated 30 large conifer logs that were placed in the stream to further improve fish habitat. Over 1.5 acres were also enhanced by removing invasive weeds like blackberry, purple loosestrife, Scot’s broom, yellow flag iris, and Reed canarygrass. The area was planted with 6,000 native trees and shrubs in 2013.
